Verdict

This handicap should produce plenty of future winners but today's victor could well be FIELD DAY, who is taken to maintain her unbeaten record at the expense of Bintalwaadi and Gobama. Brian Meehan's charge won nicely at the first time of asking last season and is bred to keep improving with age. With the step up to a mile set to suit and her ability to win first-time-out already there for all to see, the only question has to be whether this opening mark of 85 is a fair one and of course some guesswork is required to solve that. However, the maiden she won has thrown up plenty of subsequent winners and as Brian Meehan's horses tend to come on for the run the ones that win on debut are often smart, so we'll take a chance on her. There are though a host of similarly lightly-raced fillies in opposition and of them Bintalwaadi may prove the most troublesome to our pick. Ed Dunlop's inmate won nicely on the polytrack last time in a race that is beginning to work out thanks to the subsequent win of second-placed Fireback. She's been alloted a mark of 84 on the back of that and should be up to running well if as effective back on the turf. Our feeling is these quick conditions will suit her and a big run is in store. Gobama proved her liking for today's conditions when winning a decent race last time so despite the fact an 8lb rise makes life tougher she must be considered with that in mind. On a line through the second horse she holds Tafawut, so a more interesting each-way proposition could be Forest Crown who represents a yard going well and can progress further if learning to settle. My Nan Nell and Avon Lady are others to consider and the market will need a check here but our feeling is that Field Day could win this on her way to better things.
