Verdict

Charlie Appleby has yet to win this Classic but the unbeaten NATIVE TRAIL arrives with excellent credentials. Europe’s leading two-year-old having won both the National and Dewhurst Stakes at the highest level last term, he warmed up nicely for this with a facile victory over course and distance in the Craven and is the one to beat. Stablemate Coroebus ended last season with a victory in the Group 3 Autumn Stakes over track and trip but both Dubawi Legend and Point Lonsdale were beaten by the selection last year. The latter’s stable companion Luxembourg landed the Group 1 Futurity at Doncaster in October and looks a bigger threat given Aidan O’Brien has won this 10 times in the past while high-class sprinter Perfect Power beat Lusail to win the Greenham trial when upped to 7f at Newbury on his reappearance. Listed winners Checkandchallenge and Eydon and last season’s Group 3 Horris Hill winner Light Infantry look lively outsiders.
