Verdict

The elders appear to have held the upper hand in this contest over the last decade so we will take DUKE OF MARMALADE to see off New Approach and Multidimensional. Aidan O'Brien's dominance of the Group 1 scene can be added to again by the Duke, who comes here fresh from back-to-back Group One successes at Ascot. Today's ground will suit far better than York may have done and with a decent size field, there is less likelihood of him becoming undone by a tactical pace. New Approach has been one of the more controversial horses of this season. Withdrawn on the day of the Irish Derby on account of muscle problems, he has proved himself to be the best performer of his generation with a close up second in the 2,000 Guineas and an Epsom Derby success in the locker already. Regardless of any of the preamble to today's race, Jim Bolger's stable star is sure to give a good account of himself here. Multidimensional is one of two runners from the Henry Cecil camp. He was fully entitled to win the Duke Of Lancaster Stakes at Haydock and while he has fallen short at Group 1 level in the past, he does at least try hard and can have obvious each-way claims on the back of his second to Macarthur in the Hardwicke Stakes. Cecil is also represented by Phoenix Tower. Second to Mount Nelson in the Eclipse, he did finish ahead of Pipedreamer in the Prince of Wales's Stakes and should be capable of upholding that form. Championship Point and Halicarnassus are fair sorts in their grade but this isn't it. Rob Roy's American adventure never worked out and while he maintains a degree of ability, it's well over two years since he got his head in front. Cat Junior has been overdue a step up to this trip for some time and he has to be rated as one of the livelier outsiders in the field. Stubbs Art has been a credit to connections having graduated to this level from mid-range handicaps. Red Rock Canyon is here to perform the pacemaking duties and will be priced accordingly.
