In depth

Verdict

River Royale would be of interest if at his best but there is a suspicion that Peter Chapple-Hyam's runners are not at peak fitness at present and a safer option looks to be Fantaisiste, who is preferred to Philharmonic. The last mentioned made a winning return under testing conditions on Southwell's turf course last month and has to be respected off just a 4lb higher mark today under conditions that he handles just as well. Richard Fahey's gelding makes more appeal than Richard Hannon's Moonlight Man, who is held by Pat Eddery's Visionist on their running at Kempton earlier this month. All Ivory looked to be going the right way last season but lack of a recent run has to be of concern, especially with the yard yet to hit top form. Paper Talk has a bit to find with Roger Charlton's colt on running here in September and of more interest may be Compton's Eleven, who is entitled to ocme on for his recent reappearance. The vote though goes to Paul Cole's Fantaisiste, who showed a good turn of foot to land a six furlong handicap at Kempton last time, for which a 6lb rise is perfectly fair, and should not be inconvenienced by today's longer trip at all.
