      Verdict

If Balakiref takes his chance after his fine fourth at Newmarket on Saturday he can beat Orphan and Vanadium can follow him home. Michael Dods' charge was beaten less than two lengths by the ultimately impressive scorer Cape. He relishes soft ground and it could be argued that he was unlucky not to have won on his previous run at Beverley when Jamie Spencer was forced to wait for gaps to appear. This is a much easier race and if the gaps do come Balakiref can gain a welcome success. Orphan has been absent since disappointing behind Knot On Wood on fast ground at Haydock. Karl Burke thinks a lot of this horse and has stated that he believes the 4-y-old is a decent tool with cut in the ground. He can go welll. Vanadium hasn't won for over a year and, although he will like conditions, it seems significant that Eddie Ahern has decided to ride Orphan even though he has won on James Given's horse.
