BARNEY MCGREW is put forwards ahead of Valery Borzov and Tamagin in a typically competitive sprint. The selection's come from behind style ensures that he always needs a little luck in running but he's an effective performer under these conditions as he showed when winning over course and distance in May from a 5lb lower mark. His run behind Palace Moon at Doncaster was a more than satisfactory return to action and should have brought him on. There's little to choose between Valery Borzov and Tamagin on their running at Ripon in August and they are capable of going close. The former failed to cut the mustard in two runs in Dubai in the winter and it remains to be seen whether his exertions there have left a mark on him whilst the latter has also been kept on the go and has eased sufficiently in the weights to believe that he can get his head in front again. Thebes is something of an enigma as he can be very good on his day but has only won once on turf although he ran one of his better races at Pontefract a week ago. Excusez Moi also has a few quirks but made the most of a drop in the weights to win at Musselburgh and can't be confidently dismissed but the one for us is Barney McGrew.
