In depth

Verdict

Drill Sergeant disappointed on his final outing of 2007 when weakening as if something was amiss at Doncaster. That said it appeared quite a hot maiden. His second outing at Newbury reads particularly well, finishing second to the Horris Hill winner who is now classic bound. He has been weak in the market on his three outings to date which would not bode well, as strongly fancied sorts from this yard start at much shorter odds than that of Drill Sergeant on his three outings. Internationaldebut is the main danger to the Drill Sergeant. Connections have a line with the selection through King Kenny, who finished in front of Drill Sergeant at Doncaster. He was far from disgraced in the Racing Post Trophy last back end albeit possibly flattered to finish so close to the protagonists. It was disappointing to see him beaten in a weak maiden last time but he failed to get home after quickening away over two furlongs out. Of the remainder Art Trend is best watched in the market hailing from the Peter Chapple-Hyam yard while Alan Swinbanks' Yalon should be competitive in handicaps throughout the summer months. Drill Sergeant is our nomination to land this maiden.
