Verdict

Wildcat Wizard and STRIKING SPIRIT look the pair to focus on in this tight handicap with narrow preference for the latter. Dandy Nicholls' inmate ran a cracking race when giving Moorhouse Lad a real scare on his seasonal return and this step back up to six furlongs should in theory help him to improve further as all three of his career wins have been at today's distance. Quick ground is ideal and his ability to perform in a big field handicap is there for all to see, so he's taken to score. Wildcat Wizard struggled in his second season last year having shown promise as a juvenile but he showed there are races to be won with him when taking second in a similar race to this on his return. A 2lb rise makes life tougher but with the Michael Jarvis yard firing in winners he could well find the improvement required. Shifting Star has longed appealed as a horse capable of taking a decent handicap and it wouldn't be the biggest surprise were today the day, particularly if new partner William Buick adopts positive tactics aboard a horse that clearly stays further. Arthur's Edge has developed into a most versatile type having won over five and nine furlongs as well as today's trip but carrying top weight to victory here would require a career best and he can be taken on along with Cheveton, who disappointed despite having plenty in his favour on his return. Desert Phantom has a touch of class but he's a fragile sort and it remains to be seen whether he'll build on a fair run behind Blue Jack last time; if he does he could cause an upset but at this stage we prefer the more solid claims of Striking Spirit.
