Verdict
Abrasive is a fascinating newcomer but we fancy MONTPARNASSE to see off Bay Willow in the opener. Our selection was actually behind Bay Willow when the pair met at Chepstow, however Mark Johnston's horse had experience on his side and the form might well be reversed. Brian Meehan's charge looked as though the run would do him good, taking a keen hold before consenting to run on when his winning chance had gone and providing he has learned lessons from that we could witness an altogether different proposition. That's not to underestimate Bay Willow though, who seemed to have learned plenty himself when putting in a professional display at Chepstow. A resolute, galloping type, he'll make them all go and in all likelihood will prove tough to pass in the closing stages of the contest. Abrasive needs a market check for top connections with Johnny Murtagh a strong booking. He's a half brother to the Great Voltigeur winner Monitor Closely and this trip seems an ideal starting point. Henry Cecil took this last year and Moose Moran is another with claims. He was a shade disappointing at Pontefract when fancied to make a winning return to the track but that run should've brought him on and this more straightforward track may help this powerfully built gelding. Lunar Victory ran twice here as a juvenile and either of those runs would make him tough to beat but John Gosden's charge disappointed on his return and now has something to prove in a race taken to go to Montparnasse.
