In depth

Verdict

Few have shown enough to be seriously considered here and Otarie, Charlottes Web, Tambourine Ridge and Ping Pong Sivola have leading claims but we're going to throw Poppy Smith into the mix in the hope of a turn up. Otarie is stepping up to this trip for the first time but there's no indication that she won't stay and she'll be expected to go close. Her form reads slightly better than that of Tambourine Ridge but the Daly runner should also find considerable improvement for this stamina test. Charlottes Web has run respectably on all starts but needs to improve whilst Ping Pong Sivola has shown all of her form on testing ground so has to prove that she can handle the surface. So, to the selection. Poppy Smith has been well beaten in six starts in bumpers and over hurdles, all at around the minimum but she did shape with a little more promise at Chepstow last time. There is stamina in abundance in her pedigree, Brian Eckley knows the family well and has enjoyed some success with her siblings. In a race that lacks strength in depth, there could be some mileage in siding with Poppy Smith at a big price now that she's stepped up in trip in the hope that she can run into the frame and perhaps even surprise the principals.
