In depth

Verdict

MICHEAL FLIPS justified the big impression he made when winning his sole point-to-point in Ireland when scoring at Stratford on his UK debut and can give weight and a beating to his rivals here. Fifty Sheets and Indian Blood, who cut little ice on his seasonal debut 11 days ago look the main challengers for minor honours. The selection won the same 4yr old maiden at Lismore last March that both Florida Pearl and Therealbandit have won in the past and this years renewal looked strong with the second finishing runner-up behind Pandorama on his racecourse debut at Fairyhouse. There was a lot to like about the way he went away from his rivals at Stratford last time and although it is doubtful that anything of real promise was in behind, he looks a horse with a big future. Fifty Sheets bypassed an engagement on Sunday and this half-brother to Natal would be of some interest if attracting market support. He showed some promise in his sole bumper outing but the yard tend to take things slowly with their novices and he should be better for today's experience. Indian Blood basically ran himself into the ground last time at Ascot when the jockey had no option but to give him his head as he pulled fiercely through the early stages. Those exertions did take effect and his rider accepted the situation once his chance had gone. It can be safely assumed that was not his true running but he will need to learn to settle. Lepido was a 32,000 guineas purchase off the flat from Luca Cumani's yard. He showed very little in four outings during the summer but Gary Moore has a knack of getting the best from his recruits off the flat. Blazing Desert contested what looked a decent bumper on his final start last season, finishing mid-division. Ruby Isabel, one of three mares in the race is another to watch with the future in mind on her hurdling debut but Micheal Flips is the selection.
