Verdict

A maximum field declared for this prestigious and valuable sprint and our vote goes to Proclamation ahead of La Cucaracha, Patavellian, Gift Horse, Goodricke and Somnus. The field includes the Nunthorpe winner, La Cucaracha, the Sussex Stakes winner, Proclamation, who has been supplemented to run, the up-and-coming David Nicholls runner, Gift Horse, who has been well supported in the build up to the race following his valuable handicap win last Saturday, the recent French Group One winner, Goodricke, the Group One Royal Ascot at York winner, Galeota, and the July Cup third Etlaala. The going, of course, will play a part here, and La Cucaracha will not run if it is on the easy side and, of course, it would be folly to rule out Somnus, who will easy conditions and who was beaten a whisker in this last year after winning it in 2003, plus last year's Prix de l'Abbaye winner, Patavellian, and Ashdown Express, who might just get it together in a big race one of these days, have to be considered. Overall, though, we will side with Proclamation, who was impressive at Goodwood and who can prove his versatility in landing the Sprint Cup under Frankie Dettori.
