LORD SHANAKILL may be able to provide Karl Burke with a big winner although there's some serious opposition, the best of which may be Orizaba and Sayif. The American-bred colt was unconsidered on debut but ran a satisfactory race to finish third to Bahamian Babe at Thirsk in April. The following month he posted a hugely impressive performance at York where Shaweel was around 5 lengths behind when making his debut. He followed that with a creditable third in the Coventry Stakes where he gave every impression that he'd relish this step up to seven furlongs and he clearly has the necessary class. Shaweel has improved since the York race and is closely matched with Firth Of Forth on their Newmarket running. Instalment flopped in the Coventry but may prove capable of better whilst Soul City battled on well to win a warm Newmarket maiden and deserves to take his chance. Sayif was another seen in action at Newmarket and he came within a head of losing his maiden tag in a Group 2 but, given the undulating nature of this track it's a concern how green he still was that day. Orizaba returned a beaten favourite in fifth in the Coventry but he was finishing strongly having missed a beat at the start. He routed the field on debut and can be rated as the main challenger to the selection. This is one prize that has escaped the Ballydoyle behemoth in recent seasons although Aidan O'Brien has provided the runner-up on no fewer than four occasions. They are double-handed this year with Set Sail and Westphalia, who is the chosen mount of Johnny Murtagh following his second place in the Anglesey Stakes. The Irish have another strong contender in Ryehill Dreamer who is from the same yard as one of last season's leading juveniles Myboycharlie; he had a choice of engagements following his win in a Leopardstown Listed race and is another to be feared. Lord Shanakill though sets the standard and may just be sent off at a bigger price than his form merits given the illustrious connections of his opponents and he gets the vote.
