With not many of this big field in particularly good form, this is a race where it would probably be advised not to get too heavily involved, but the lightly-raced Batto gets a tentative each-way vote ahead of Bernard, the Varlet and Crown Agent. Batto showed nothing in two all-weather starts last year, but William Haggas' gelding hinted at some ability when seventh at Newmarket on his turf debut this year. By Slip Anchor, he is likely to improve significantly over this distance for the first time, and with Darryll Holland booked to ride he could take advantage of a very low mark for his handicap debut. Bernard has a similar profile, and although Roger Charlton's colt was beaten quite a long way when fourth at Haydock last time, he is another who should improve for this step up in trip. The Varlet has at least got some more solid form in the book, and Marcus Tregoning's gelding was not beaten far when fourth in arguably a better race at Newbury last time, so should certainly be thereabouts off just a one pound higher mark. Crown Agent was favourite for a competitive race at Leicester last time but unfortunately swerved and unseated his rider at the start, and as long as he does not repeat those antics he must also come into the reckoning in this weak contest.
