In depth

Verdict

In this maiden, we will side with Spriggan ahead of Laish Ya Hajar and Destour. Working through these and, placed in a couple of Newmarket maidens on his last two starts, Bold Abbott looks a major player here in what is an average maiden, although, of course, he did not make our short list. John Gosden's Calculating improved from run one to two last season and more of the same is very much a possibility. Given that he is a 75,000 guineas son of Royal Applause, the Jeremy Nosed-trained Destour is very much one to consider, and Emperor Court is another newcomer with likeable breeding. Laish Ya Hajar is from a good family and has to be on your short list, while Spriggan has shown good promise in each maiden start. The market might prove informative for this contest but, without that, we will side with Spriggan, who proved that he acted at this idiosyncratic track on his debut.
