In depth

Verdict

The weight that Bay Story receives from Lost Soldier Three and Camrose is enough to swing the vote towards the Mark Johnston-trained colt. With Midas Way and Odiham others have leading claims at this level. Sendintank and Christoro are also respected but neither look particularly well treated from their present standing in the ratings. Odiham is a dour stayer that is capable of racing with the pace. He has a visor fitted for the first time this afternoon and, with his rider taking 7lb off with his claim, the son of Deploy has fair each-way claims. Midas Way was outclassed in a Listed race at Goodwood a fortnight ago and should appreciate this ease in grade. He does stay the trip well but, as he is hard to win with, he too looks a place prospect at best. Camrose gained compensation for several near misses when winning at York last month and will be dangerous to rule out. However, this trip does stretch his stamina a little and he may be vulnerable near the finish. Last Soldier Three would have outstanding claims were it not for a rating of 106. Luca Cumani's charge does get on well with Kieren Fallon but has a very stiff test at the weights. Therefore, we take a chance with Bay Story, who ran a fine race when third in a valuable handicap at Haydock six days ago. The son of Kris is a typically battle hardened campaigner from the Johnston yard and has crammed in eight outings since he was introduced in April. Bay Story has improved with each appearance and rates a good value now that he has proved himself over the distance.
