Just 10lb separates top weight Falcon Eight, ridden by Frankie Dettori, with the three at the foot of the handicap in the week’s feature. Dermot Weld’s stayer has a touch of class but Irish raiders fare badly in this as a rule and the six-year-old has been gelded since last seen in June of last year. Who Dares Wins was second in this two years ago and has since won the Ascot Stakes over even further but he’s not been in great form on the all-weather over the winter. Another nine-year-old, Not So Sleepy, won a Grade 3 hurdle in December and is no slouch on the Flat but has his quirks and likes to lead so stall 13 may not be ideal. Mark Johnston runs five in an attempt to replicate Making Miracles’ triumph in 2019 and it’s interesting that Franny Norton sticks with Trumpet Man even though he was behind Themaxwecan, Cardano, Hochfeld and Nate The Great at Musselburgh. Future Investment won over 2m here last year but was never sighted in the Cesarewitch in his final start of the campaign and finished behind Not So Sleepy. THE GRAND VISIR is a strong stayer who will act on the ground. He doesn’t have many miles on the clock and a third in last year’s Doncaster Cup shows what he is capable of if he gets the run of the race. Rare Groove has been in good form at Newcastle but has another career-high mark to defy today.
