Bottom weight SIR ROYAL is the selection for this prestigious affair, and the main dangers are regarded as recent winner Golden Penny and Kiwi Bay. Despite not winning in his last 12 starts, Kiwi Bay is still racing off a mark 5lbs higher than his last winning rating. He is thoroughly consistent however, as he showed with a sound second in a decent handicap recently. His yard is enduring a quiet spell however, and he may have to wait a little longer before resuming winning ways. Golden Penny won well at Newcastle recently and is running into form. The second has since run well in defeat and he looks sure to go well. Alan Swinbank regarded Sir Royal as one of his best prospects at the start of the campaign, and he will have been disappointed that he is still to lose his maiden tag. He has run some solid races however, and looks fairly treated here. The strong pace and stiff finish looks sure to suit him, and Sir Royal can take this en route to better things.
