Just Lille is selected to land this handicap after an encouraging seasonal debut at Ripon where she finished 1l adrift of the winner Veiled Applause. She appeared to be in need of that outing as she got outpaced at one point but stayed on stoutly in the closing stages. She proved herself a real progressive mare throughout last summer and while this will be tough off 83, there was plenty encouragement to draw from that Ripon effort. Speedy Sam carries the mandatory 6lb penalty for a victory last week. Awarded a soft lead, Fergus Sweeney dictated matters from the front but is unlikely to get things his own way on the front end here. He remains attractively weighted on the best of his form. Course and distance winner Sudden Impulse appears plenty high enough in the handicap while Charlie Tipple did not enjoy the clearest of passages in the Ripon event where Just Lille finished runner-up. That said, he is a horse who tends to travel well and flatten out which can be deceiving. Northern Jem hails from a yard who have had a quite start to the turf season but have been showing signs of hitting form. The Margarson runner has been dropped 4lb from his highest mark last season, a mark off which he ran very well in more competitive events than this. Keep an eye on the market where the Newmarket raider is concerned but Just Lille is given the nomination.
