      Verdict

      VALRYIAN STEEL made a successful debut at Newcastle beating subsequent Newmarket winner Wise Glory, who is now rated 84, in a driving finish. Roger Varian's charge is penalised and has nothing in hand of Al Khabeer on official ratings but has much more scope and can remain unbeaten. Ricksen has achieved a mark of 79 thanks to his second to the long odds-on Tiritomba at Ayr though that may flatter him as the winner had plenty in hand. The remaining pair have mountains to climb on what they have shown so far.
