In depth

Verdict

Alan King has his runners in good form at present so his representative here, Pennek, has to be respected on only his second start over fences but he will need to go better than on his chasing debut at Ffos Las last month to reverse form that day with SPECIAL ENVOY, who gets the vote ahead of Emperor Concerto. Lucy Wadham's gelding is unexposed after just seven career starts and the seven-year-old made a pleasing first start over the larger obstacles when chasing home Massasoit at Fakenham last month. He is open to plenty of improvement and looks the main threat to the selection. The Brig At Ayr and Ringsend Rose make very limited appeal and of more interest among the rest of the runners is Don McCain's Fabalu, who has shown gradual improvement in recent starts over fences. He has to be considered but it is hard to get away from Nicky Henderson's Special Envoy, who was easily the pick of these over hurdles and looks to be the pick of them over fences as well judged by his debut effort at Ffos Las.
