Verdict

With the defection of D'Argent earlier in the week, this year's renewal is really wide-open, and only a narrow vote goes the way of Cornish Rebel over the likes of Comply Or Die, Chives, Take The Stand and Double Honour. Despite the size of the field, the stats are against many of them, as none of the last 10 winners have carried less than 10st 5lb, with the majority humping 11 stone or more to victory at the Scottish track. With that in mind, a chance is taken that Cornish Rebel can give Ruby Walsh a grand slam, the Irishman having already collected the English, Irish and Welsh versions this season. Cornish Rebel has gained three wins, and been placed twice in five starts over fences, and although he has yet to impress with his jumping, the Paul Nichols inmate falls into the right ratings band and is three-pound better off with Comply Or Die on their Royal & SunAlliance Chase running. The latter is on the upgrade and also has major claims, but six-year-olds do not have a good record. However, Martin Pipe was successful with Take Control three years ago and his main contender will not go down without a fight. Chives can be considered as well after his fourth to Kelami at Cheltenham and he makes more appeal than the likes of topweight Take The Stand who keeps the weights down, and Double Honour, who both ran in the National. The last horse to run at Aintree and then triumph here was Little Polveir back in 1987. Colourful Life was going well when falling at Cheltenham and it would be no surprise if he were to reach the frame off his low weight, while The Bajan Bandit, Joes Edge and Another Rum, despite being out of the handicap, can all make their presence felt without being good enough. Cornish Rebel has long lived in the shadow of his brother Best Mate, but is taken to give Paul Nichols a second success in the race and to take the Ditcheat stable closer to Pipe in the battle for the trainers title.
