Irish stayers have won four of the last five renewals so there will be plenty of interest in Thomas Hobson, bidding to give Willie Mullins a third win in five years. The seven-year-old was a decent handicapper on the Flat when trained by John Gosden back in 2013 and has won four times over hurdles for Ireland’s top NH yard. Jumpers have an excellent record in this marathon overall and Who Dares Wins, one of three Alan King runners, was a close fourth in the Chester Cup last time having been well backed, though fifth Magic Circle got no run that day and could reverse the placings with Tom Marquand’s mount and also second Yorkidding, a winner since at Haydock. High Secret was second over 1m6f at Goodwood when reverting to the Flat but the pick of the weights may be BEYOND CONCEIT. Nicky Henderson won this in 2011 with Veiled and he’s done well to nurse this son of Galileo back to health. The eight-year-old won here over hurdles at the start of the year before getting outpaced in the Supreme Novices’ at Cheltenham. He was much more at home given a test of stamina at Aintree and this should be right up his street.
