Tottenham were dumped out of the FA Cup on penalties by Norwich after missing three spot-kicks in the shootout, losing 3-2 after a 1-1 draw in normal time.
Spurs looked in full control of the tie when Jan Vertonghen (13) showed great determination to head home following a Giovani Lo Celso set piece.
However, roared on by 9,000 visiting fans, Norwich took advantage of Tottenham's lack of urgency in the second half and equalised when Michel Vorm - who was making his first start since 2018 - fumbled a Kenny McLean effort and Josip Drmic bundled home to take the game to extra-time.
Both teams looked tired in the extra minutes, so penalties were needed to separate them. When McLean missed Norwich's first penalty, Spurs were odds-on to progress but some woeful spot-kicks from Troy Parrott, Erik Lamela and Gedson Fernandes meant visiting Tim Krul was the hero for the visitors.
To compound matters for Spurs, there were ugly scenes at full-time as Eric Dier entered the stands and was seen clashing with a supporter, who was having an altercation with Dier's brother, according to Jose Mourinho.
Norwich will face either Derby or Manchester United in the last eight as they find themselves this deep into the competition for the first time in 28 years.
Fresh from a morale-boosting victory over Leicester on Friday Night Football, Norwich popped the ball around confidently in the early stages but found themselves behind on 13 minutes.
Lo Celso, who had already forced Krul into a smart low stop, delivered the goods from a free kick on the left flank and Vertonghen rose highest to power the hosts in front. It was an emotionally charged celebration from Vertonghen, who was making his first appearance at home since being substituted in the last round against Southampton where he visibly looked upset on the bench.
Krul was called upon again just before the break to deny Lucas Moura with a brave block after the Canaries tried to play out from inside their own box but were caught short.
Norwich - who are bottom of the Premier League and six points adrift of safety - mounted a spirited second-half display with Todd Cantwell pulling the strings and providing Jamal Lewis and Max Aarons with good service down the wings.
The Canaries were rewarded for their endeavours when Drmic followed in after Vorm had a moment of rustiness at the wrong time. Mclean's shot shouldn't have caused much concern for a Premier League goalkeeper but the Dutchman couldn't hold on and Drmic bravely followed in to draw the visitors level.
The goal actually sparked Spurs back into life for the closing stages and they came close to stealing the win when Serge Aurier's effort was somehow deflected off the line by Ben Godfrey as the tie went to extra-time.
Mourinho sent on teenage Republic of Ireland forward Parrott towards the end of the first period of the added time in place of the ineffective Dele Alli but he also struggled to impact the game.
Chances were at a premium and penalties were required to separate the well matched teams.
Vorm looked to have redeemed himself with an early stop from Mclean only for substitute Lamela to hit the crossbar to hand a lifeline to Norwich.
Krul then took the limelight as he made saves from Parrott and Fernandes as Norwich got over the line and celebrated in front of a bouncing away end.
Tottenham midfielder Dier broke into the stands and confronted supporters after their FA Cup defeat at home to Norwich.
Dier was filmed and pictured on social media climbing over rows of seats before being involved in a confrontation with his own fans and then led away by stewards.
"I cannot run away from the question and I think Eric Dier did something that we professionals cannot but, in these circumstances, something that every one of us would do," Mourinho said.
"When someone insults you and your family is there, and your family gets involved with the person that is insulting you, in this case your younger brother, I think Eric did what we professionals cannot."

The Dutchman has made a name for himself when it comes to spot-kick heroics. He sprung from the bench in the 2014 World Cup to win a penalty shootout for the Netherlands against Costa Rica and was at it again six years on when Norwich needed his skills. The experienced stopper was majestic during normal time, too, denying Lo Celso and Moura with some brilliant blocking.
Tottenham go to Burnley on Saturday Night Football, live on Sky Sports Premier League at 5.30pm, while Norwich are at Sheffield United in the Premier League at 3pm on Saturday.
