Switzerland saw off Republic of Ireland 1-0 in their Under 21 European Championship qualification contest. The defeat, Ireland's fourth of the campaign, sees the Swiss secure their place in the play-offs. There is no such joy for the Irish, as they have endured a miserable run of results. They were already out of contention for a qualifying berth before the game started and remain rooted to the foot of Group Two after another disappointing 90 minutes. Fabian Frei bagged the only goal of the match on Friday, notching three minutes into the second half. Ireland had started the game brightly, offering early promise as Anthony Stokes and Alan Judge tested home goalkeeper Yann Sommer, but their threat soon fizzled out.
