St Mirren 2-2 Rangers: Lewis Morgan foils Gers with stoppage-time equaliser

Lewis Morgan scored deep into stoppage time to earn a 2-2 draw for St Mirren at home to Rangers in their final Scottish Championship game of the season.

Rangers thought they had come from behind to win when Jason Holt found the bottom corner on 88 minutes.

Mark Warburton's side had started poorly and fell behind to former Gers youngster Calum Gallagher's opener, fired inside Wes Foderingham at the near post just before half-time.

Veteran striker Kenny Miller equalised when he headed home a James Tavernier cross on 54 minutes before Holt's neat one-two bore fruit, but they end the season on 81 points after substitute Morgan's goal at the death.

Rangers have been accused of taking their eye off the ball following their Scottish Cup semi-final victory over Celtic, and the promoted side will end the season without a win from their final four league games since that Hampden Park success.

They were buoyed by the return of top-scorer Martyn Waghorn after 11 weeks out with injury and the Englishman smashed the ball off the base of the post after 19 minutes before whipping another effort just wide shortly after.

Foderingham saved well from an early Stevie Mallan free-kick but the Rangers 'keeper almost gifted St Mirren the lead when, under pressure from a poor back-pass from Rob Kiernan, he kneed a clearance against Lawrence Shankland and watched the ball bounce wide of his goal.

And he was arguably to blame for Gallagher's opener when he allowed a fierce low shot inside his near post on 40 minutes.

Gers woke up after the break and the leveller came nine minutes into the half when Miller rose above his marker with familiar determination and beat the 'keeper with a well-directed header for his 20th goal of the season.

Arsenal loanee Gideon Zelalem went close and St Mirren 'keeper Jamie Langfield pushed another Miller effort onto the bar as the away side pushed for the victory, and they thought they had it when Holt exchanged a neat one-two with Nicky Clark and swept the ball into the far corner.

Buddies manager Alex Rae gave the home fans one last sight of retiring pair Jim Goodwin and Steven Thompson in a black-and-white-striped shirt - the pair coming on to a standing ovation in the 74th minute.

And they celebrated wildly, before performing a lap of honour, after Morgan cut in from the left and slammed the ball past Foderingham in the second minute of added time, as St Mirren finished the season in sixth.
