Primera Division: Stephane Mbia scores twice as Sevilla beat Deportivo 4-1
Sunday 5 October 2014 14:27, UK
Stephane Mbia netted a brace as Sevilla returned to winning ways with a comfortable 4-1 victory over Deportivo La Coruna at the Ramon Sanchez Pizjuan.
Mbia got the ball rolling midway through the first half before Haris Medunjanin made it level at the break. But Carlos Bacca, Mbia with his second and Vitolo sealed the win for Unai Emery's side.
Bacca missed a 69th-minute penalty but it did not take the gloss off their triumph which moved them up to third in the Primera Division table, while struggling Depor remain bottom with just four points from their opening seven games.
The home side started brightest and Vitolo tested Depor goalkeeper German Lux early on as he pounced on Ever Banega's corner, but the Argentina international safely held his effort out.
Sevilla midfielder Denis Suarez came close with two chances midway through the first half but he sent both wide of the target as the home side pressed for an opener.

They did not have much longer to wait as 28-year-old Cameroon midfielder Mbia headed them in front as he nodded home at the near post from Gerard Deulofeu's corner after 24 minutes.
Youngster Deulofeu almost doubled their lead after the restart, but it was Depor - with their first real chance of note - that netted the second goal of the match.
Sevilla defender Coke conceded a free-kick outside the box for bringing down Juanfran and Medunjanin took the set piece and picked his spot well as he fired home the equaliser just after the half-hour mark.
Benoit Tremoulinas hit the bar as the away side attempted to take the lead, but Sevilla were in front again eight minutes later as Bacca picked up Deulofeu's cross to score from close-range and hand his side the half-time lead.
Bacca turned provider 12 minutes after the break as the hosts began to dominate again as his cross from the left found Mbia in the box, who fired the ball high into the back of the Depor net for his fifth goal of the season.
Vitolo was on target with Los Rojiblancos' fourth after 63 minutes as he capitalised on Deulofeu's cross with a close-range finish from the right of the box to extend their lead even further.
Five minutes later Lux conceded a penalty for a foul on Bacca but as the Colombia striker aimed for the top-left corner, his effort was parried away by the visiting keeper who chose correctly.
Juanfran tested home stopper Beto as the half wore on but his long-range strike was comfortably held out, while second-half substitute Cezary Wilk twice tested Beto late on but with no reward for his efforts as Depor left with nothing.
