Leading marksman Paddy Madden fired Scunthorpe to a 1-0 victory at home to fellow strugglers Fleetwood.
The breakthrough came in the 68th minute when Madden netted his sixth goal of the season, finishing a first-time shot in the box after good work by Joe Lolley had created the opening.
It was only the second win in 10 games for the home side, lifting them out of the bottom four.
For an hour, though, they had struggled to impress against managerless Fleetwood, getting nothing on target to trouble goalkeeper Chris Maxwell.
The visitors gave a debut to Brazilian centre-back Dionatan Teixeira, signed on loan from Stoke, who added strength to a struggling defence with one of the poorest goals against record in League One this season.
He held firm in a goalless first half which saw Scunthorpe enjoy plenty of possession without offering much threat in attack, despite some promptings by their debut midfield loan signing Tommy Rowe from Wolves.
Fleetwood then almost snatched the lead early in the second half when Victor Nirennold set up striker David Ball for a shot from the edge of the box which was touched over by keeper Luke Daniels.
But it was Madden who had the decisive say for Scunthorpe, with defeat plunging Fleetwood into the bottom four.
