Bayern Munich dropped their first points of the Bundesliga season as they drew 1-1 away at Freiburg.
Bayern Munich dropped their first points of the Bundesliga season as Freiburg snatched a 1-1 draw at home to the defending champions. In a fixture brought forward due to Bayern's participation in the UEFA Super Cup on Friday, Bayern dominated possession but were unable to translate their superiority into goals. Xherdan Shaqiri put them in front in the 33rd minute, but the Bavarians were punished for not adding to that solitary strike when Nicolas Hofler levelled four minutes from time. Bayern boss Pep Guardiola made seven changes to the side which defeated Nurnberg at the weekend, leaving out captain Philipp Lahm as well as attacking trio Arjen Robben, Franck Ribery and Mario Mandzukic. Freiburg appeared keen to take advantage and Oliver Sorg had the first dangerous effort of the evening, not really troubling Bayern goalkeeper Manuel Neuer, who had survived Guardiola's rotation. Toni Kroos and Shaqiri both tested Oliver Baumann at the other end before Claudio Pizarro lobbed the Freiburg keeper, but Thomas Muller committed a foul as he tried to nod the ball in. Bayern seemed to lack the cutting edge so often provided by Ribery, Robben and Mandzukic, but they still found a route to goal through Shaqiri. The Switzerland international drilled a cross from Muller inside a post from close range after Sorg misjudged a cross. Shaqiri had two further chances to double Bayern's advantage, Baumann denying him both times, albeit with a bit of help from his defence on the first occasion. Charles Laprevotte went close to levelling on a rare counter-attack from the home team, but Neuer just got his fingertips to the Freiburg midfielder's shot to touch the ball on to the outside of a post. Bayern had chances to make their lead more comfortable, most notably with Kroos denied by Baumann's left foot as the Bayern midfielder broke through, and the Freiburg keeper also kept Muller's follow-up effort out. Freiburg substitute Sebastian Kerk tested Neuer with a header as Bayern's lead, in spite of their dominance, started to look precarious. And they were punished late on when Sebastian Freis lifted a ball to the far post where Hofler volleyed in from five yards out to end Bayern's perfect start to the season.
