Bury win 5-4 on penalties
Tuesday 9 October 2012 22:26, UK
Bury earned a place in the third round of the Johnstone's Paint Trophy with a 5-4 penalty shoot-out win at Rochdale.
Without a win so far this season, the Shakers came from a goal down to draw 1-1 after 90 minutes, and goalkeeper Trevor Carson's save from Phil Edwards proved crucial with every other spot-kick converted. The hosts took the lead 18 minutes in when Ashley Grimes curled a measured right-footed finish wide of Bury goalkeeper Trevor Carson. And Grimes almost doubled his tally just before the break when he flicked Andrew Tutte's cross goalward, Carson scrambling across his goal-line to push the ball behind. Bury improved after the interval and levelled in the 52nd minute. Phil Edwards was adjudged to have handled Adam Lockwood's shot and referee Robert Madley awarded a spot-kick. Steven Schumacher's effort was saved by Ben Smith, but the Shakers skipper converted the rebound. Dale were reduced to 10 men for the last 10 minutes when Craig Curran was dismissed for a stud- up challenge on Carson. Bury pressed hard for a winner in the closing stages, but Kevin Blackwell's men secured the win via the shoot-out.
