David Wheeler and Arron Davies ensured Exeter beat Portsmouth 2-1 at Fratton Park to end Pompey's unbeaten start to the season.
Midfielder Wheeler dispossessed Danny Hollands and then scampered down the wing before drilling home midway through the first half, with Davies nodding in a second in the 56th minute.
A great save from Bobby Olejnik denied Gareth Evans the chance to grab a third-minute lead and then Jordan Moore-Taylor heroically blocked the wide man's rebound.
For all the hosts' early dominance - they had in excess of 80 per cent possession - it was Exeter who took the lead when Wheeler netted in the 20th minute.
The Grecians should have doubled their lead in the 56th minute, Lee Holmes' low cross was not dealt with but Aaron McCarey saved well to deny Christian Ribeiro.
But a minute later it became 2-0. Holmes crossed again, McCarey parried, and Davies nodded it into the top corner for his first goal of the season.
Substitute Gary Roberts slapped in a stoppage-time consolation but Paul Cook tasted defeat for the first time in the Fratton Park dug-out, with Pompey dropping to fifth in Sky Bet League Two.
