West Brom scraped into the fifth round of the FA Cup after a 4-3 penalty shoot-out win over League One Peterborough on Wednesday.

An evenly-fought contest finished 1-1 after 120 minutes, with Jon Taylor giving Posh a 55th-minute lead in the replay but Darren Fletcher equalising for the visitors shortly afterwards.

Martin Samuelsen and Fletcher both missed penalties in the shoot-out before Ben Foster saved from Lee Angol to book the Baggies' place in the next round, where they will go to Reading on the weekend of February 20.

Saido Berahino started for the Premier League side along with Salomon Rondon and Cristian Gamboa while Peterborough made four changes from their last league outing.

It was the hosts who started on the front foot as Barry Beautyman had a shot blocked inside the box and Foster pushed away an effort from Chris Forrester.

Beautyman then fired at Foster from a tight angle as Posh controlled the opening half an hour.

It took the Baggies until the 35th minute to create an opening as Rondon chested down a long ball and Berahino shot just past the post from the edge of the box.

James McClean and James Chester then had efforts blocked before Jonas Olsson headed over the bar for the improving visitors.

But, as in the first half, Posh were quick out of the traps after the break.

Their pressure eventually told with a clinical counter-attack in the 55th minute as Angol passed inside for Taylor and he beat Foster with a deflected effort from just inside the area.

The hosts continued to threaten but failed to add to their lead. And, after Craig Gardner volleyed wide, the Baggies drew level when Fletcher expertly finished on the half-volley from McClean's cut-back.

Berahino then had a goal-bound shot blocked by Michael Bostwick before Ben Alnwick saved from Rondon as the Baggies pressed for a winner.

The visitors carried the momentum through into extra-time as Fletcher and Gardner saw shots blocked.

On-loan West Ham youngster Samuelsen looked Peterborough's most threatening player and he fired over the bar after a mazy run into the box.

Gabriel Zakuani blocked Gardner's shot on the line at the other end while Berahino missed a glorious chance in the final minute, heading wide when unmarked inside the six-yard box.

The first four penalties in the shoot-out were scored but Foster then saved from Samuelsen before Fletcher rolled his penalty wide of the post.

Andrew Fox and Chester netted to level it up at 3-3 but Angol then saw his effort saved as the visitors edged home.
