Shaun Derry hailed Cambridge's superb all-round performance after they beat his former team Notts County 1-0 at Meadow Lane.
The U's boss was sacked by the Magpies in March 2015 but led his side to the double over his ex-outfit last season, and they won again thanks to Conor Newton.
He took full advantage of excellent work by Uche Ikpeazu to curl around goalkeeper Adam Collin, while Genaro Snijders went close for County when he dragged his shot wide of the far post.
But Derry insists his side should have won by more as they celebrated their sixth league win of the season.
"If I am being brutally honest we could have been out of sight in the first half. I thought we were fantastic," he said.
"We had to do a bit of defending in the second half, but that's hats off to the organisation that we play with.
"When it comes to being on the front foot and being creative we showed that in the first half, in the second we were a team that was hard to break down. That's fantastic when you can win a game in different ways.
"We could have scored more and there were plenty of chances.
"But the players are driving themselves now. You do a team talk at half-time but then you realise everything has been said.
"I want my players to be true leaders and they are playing like it. I saw that and we also played with a bit of style. The first goal was fantastic."
