Nottingham Forest 2-1 Shrewsbury: Championship side scrape through in Carabao Cup
Tuesday 8 August 2017 23:42, UK
Goals from Mustapha Carayol and Jason Cummings secured Nottingham Forest a 2-1 win over Shrewsbury - but not before the League One side forced a few nervous moments at the City Ground in the Carabao Cup first round.
Shaun Whalley's penalty gave the visitors hope late on and Reds goalkeeper Dimi Evtimov had to conjure up an injury-time save to deny Shrewsbury from forcing an extra 30 minutes.
The closest Shrewsbury came to scoring in the first half was when a cross from Arthur Gnahoua swerved dangerously towards the top corner, forcing Evtimov to palm over.
It was Forest who were creating the better chances, with Eric Lichaj firing a shot straight at Dean Henderson, while Cummings saw a dipping shot spin away off the crossbar.
Carayol had been a menace down the Forest left and, when he twisted and turned his way into the penalty area, Abu Ogogo dangled a leg to bring the winger down.

Carayol snatched the ball and justified his confidence with a composed finish, prodding a low shot to Henderson's right after the goalkeeper had moved in the opposite direction in the 29th minute.
After the break, Ben Osborn beat Henderson in a race to the ball but saw it frustratingly spin out of play, while fellow Forest substitute Tendayi Darikwa flashed a shot just wide.
Carayol was to inspire Forest again, however, as he sent Cummings clear of the Shrewsbury offside trap in the 75th minute, with the former Hibernian forward providing an emphatic finish to make it 2-0.
Four minutes later it was 2-1 after Niall Ennis went down under a challenge from Andreas Bouchalakis and Whalley converted the resulting penalty.
Evtimov had to make an injury-time save from Alex Rodman to prevent Shrewsbury from levelling.
