Former Newcastle striker Alan Shearer believes the club are in "real danger" of being relegated this season.

The Magpies are in freefall - just five points above the drop zone with four games left after seven straight Premier League defeats.

Writing in his column in The Sun newspaper, Shearer said: "Have no doubts about it - Newcastle are now in real danger of going down.

"I didn't think so until Saturday but after that performance I can't actually say with any certainty that we will get another point this season.

"Manager John Carver has been getting some stick but he loves the club and I know he is hurting.

“Why don't the Newcastle players start taking some responsibility because right now they are an embarrassment?"

The club are also at loggerheads with supporters, who have protested against Mike Ashley’s ownership of the club for several weeks, with a number of fans abstaining from the last two home games.

And boss Carver was forced to deny he swore at supporters during a heated exchange during Saturday’s 3-2 defeat at to Swansea at St James’ Park.

He said: "Yes, I am getting stick from the crowd and I’ll take that on the chin, I’ll explain to people why I do things – I don’t have a problem with that.

"If anybody wants to talk me about it, I will talk to them about it, but I won’t give up on it and I will fight to the end.”
