Paul Lambert felt his side did everything but score against Liverpool

Paul Lambert felt the only thing missing from Aston Villa's performance in their loss to Liverpool was a goal as his side failed to score for the 13th time this season.

Villa created chances against Brendan Rodgers’ side at Villa Park but goals from Fabio Borini and Rickie Lambert condemned the hosts to their seventh Premier League game without a victory.

The result also meant Villa have only managed to scored one goal in their last seven games in all competitions and have registered a total of just 11 goals in the Premier League this season.

Despite their wastefulness in front of goal, Lambert is confident that results will come if they keep performing to their current level.

“We peppered their goal and dominated the game,” he said.

“We put together some really good play but got hit with the second goal that took the sting out of our tail. The energy and commitment was there but the only thing was lacking was a goal and their goalkeeper was their best player.

“The difference in (the) teams, in terms of value, is huge but when you look at the game there wasn’t much in it. You make mistakes at this level and you get punished. That’s what happening at the minute.”

Brendan Rodgers was delighted with his side's resilience

A planned protest by Aston Villa fans about their downturn in fortunes over the last four seasons never really materialised with only 150 supporters spending the first eight minutes of the game in the Holte End concourses.

Three unofficial fans websites – Villa Blog, My Old Man Said and A Villa Fan – called on fellow supporters to boycott the opening eight minutes of the game via an open letter entitled 'We Want Our Villa Back'.

Lambert said: “We weren’t sure what we was coming into.

“We were a bit apprehensive. As I said the other day, protests won’t do anyone any good. The fans were excellent and that the atmosphere was great.”
