Sweeney tames Lions

Image: Sweeney: Super strike

Anthony Sweeney's second-half strike was enough to earn Hartlepool the points at Millwall.

Anthony Sweeney's second-half strike gave Hartlepool all the points at struggling Millwall. The midfielder smashed a 25-yard rocket beyond the reach of Lenny Pidgeley in the 50th minute to move Pools to within touching distance of the play-offs. The Lions had started the brighter and Hartlepool goalkeeper Jan Budtz pulled off a great reflex save to keep out Jamie O'Hara's shot. The home side finished the half the stronger and Alan Dunne should have done better with a header when O'Hara's cross found him in space. Midfielder Ahmet Brkovic then teed up Gary Alexander four minutes before the break but Budtz somehow got a glove to his header. Pools were a different side in the second period and after Sweeney's was given too much time and space to break the deadlock they dominated the half.
