Claudio Ranieri was happy with his Leicester side's performance despite their penalty shoot-out defeat to Hull City on Tuesday evening.

Riyad Mahrez's opening miss proved costly as Hull advanced to the Capital One Cup quarter-finals for the first time in their history.

Mahrez had given the Foxes the lead in extra time only for Abel Hernandez to level five minutes later, and Ranieri said the equalising goal came at a "bad moment" for his team.

"I'm not happy with the result but I'm happy with the performance because we knew it was a tough match and we played strong," Ranieri told the club's official website.

"We tried to do our best and we scored a goal but we conceded a goal in a bad moment. We were very, very close to finishing the match with a win but we then lost the penalty shoot-out."

The Leicester boss also paid tribute to the performance of young full-back Ben Chilwell. The teenage left-back did well against Hull midfielder Mohamed Diame as the Foxes suffered defeat for only the second time in all competitions this season.

"I'm very glad for the performance from Ben Chilwell because he played like a mature player," Ranieri added.

"Hull City at home are very good. They are second in the Championship. It was a good match for us and we played strongly to try to win the match. We lost the match but the performance was OK."

Hull boss Steve Bruce was pleased with his team's performance against Premier League opposition, but said that "erratic" refereeing decisions did go against his side in the second half and during extra time.

Chuba Akpom was booked for simulation after going down in the Leicester box, while Hull players appealed for a goal after Harry Maguire's header was cleared off the line .

"It's nice to go through and I thought we played very well," Bruce told Sky Sports. "The one on Chuba is beyond me, the thing is he's [the referee] 15 yards away. I understand the linesman is 50, 60 yards away and that's a difficult decision then.

"You have to look at the video and it does look in [Maguire's header]. So we were harshly treated there and I have to say even though we've gone through, some of the referee decisions were erratic."
