Borussia Dortmund missed the chance to go second in the Bundesliga as they drew 1-1 at Werder Bremen.

Marco Reus' sixth goal in his last nine league games gave Dortmund a 19th-minute lead but his miss just before half-time, when one-on-one with goalkeeper Jiri Pavlenka, proved pivotal.

The hosts made Reus pay immediately as they went up the other end and equalised through Thomas Delaney's looping header over goalkeeper Roman Burki.

Reus, Manuel Akanji and Jadon Sancho all saw efforts hit the woodwork for Dortmund, who stay third in the table and two points behind Schalke.

At the other end of the standings, Mainz gave their survival hopes a boost with a 3-0 home victory against out-of-form RB Leipzig.

Pablo De Blasis put the hosts ahead from the penalty spot after 29 minutes before a couple of late goals sealed the win late on.

Alexandru Maxim gave Mainz a two-goal cushion with five minutes remaining and Bote Baku struck in injury-time as Sandro Schwarz's men moved up to 14th in the table.

Leipzig, who have now conceded 13 goals in their last four league matches, finished the game with 10 men as Liverpool-bound midfielder Naby Keita was sent off right at the end.
