Season review

It was difficult to imagine Swansea staying up during the first half of the season under Francesco Guidolin and then Bob Bradley, but their early struggles feel like a distant memory after Paul Clement guided them to survival.

Carlo Ancelotti's former assistant brought some much-needed defensive stability to Swansea. He got the best out of attacking duo Gylfi Sigurdsson and Fernando Llorente and also had help from January signings Tom Carroll and Martin Olsson.

A six-game winless streak between March and April caused anxiety in south Wales, but Swansea responded with a run of four wins out of five to clinch their survival. Under Clement, they will be confident of avoiding another relegation battle next season.

Managerial review

Clement has been absolutely excellent and I've been very impressed with the man. Yes, he's had his angry spells, when he was very cold and cutting towards his side when they weren't being brave enough, but he brought in the likes of Alfie Mawson and got the results he needed.

He didn't panic, and that performance at Old Trafford, when they should have beaten Manchester United, showed how far he has brought this team. When we were talking about the best managers on Soccer Saturday we mentioned Antonio Conte, Mauricio Pochettino, Eddie Howe and Sean Dyche, but I would have to put Clement in there because when he came in this club was on the floor.

Player of the year: Gylfi Sigurdsson

Sigurdsson by a decent distance. He's a genuine superstar of the bottom of the league and wouldn't look out of place in any top side. Sure he has quiet games, which is always going to be the case for his sort of player at Swansea, but this lad wins you matches. Fernando Llorente, for all people criticise the yards he covers, has done well and they missed him when he was out.

He'll need three or four first-team players and they can aim for mid-table.

2017/18 prospects

It will be about letting the manager find the players who can bring his attacking, creative philosophy to life. It may be out of his hands with Sigurdsson's future but hopefully that will give him the money to bring in players, while he can get more out of Leroy Fer, Kyle Naughton and Jefferson Montero. He'll need three or four first-team players and they can aim for mid-table, while you know he'll give young players a chance.
