Sam Gallagher reduced Rovers' deficit midway through the second half, but any hopes of a fightback looked to be dashed with Gordon Greer's red card after 74 minutes before Glenn Murray restored Brighton's two-goal cushion shortly afterwards.

Gallagher got another goal back in injury time, but Chris Hughton's team held on to leapfrog Newcastle into top spot. The Magpies can regain the lead with a win at Wigan on Wednesday night.
