What they need...

Guardiola has already begun the process of moulding his squad, with Gundogan and Nolito expected to feature prominently next season, but more reinforcements are required. Central defence is a priority, with Eliaquim Mangala and Nicolas Otamendi struggling to adapt to English football and Vincent Kompany repeatedly falling victim to injuries.

Guardiola needs ball-playing centre-backs for his possession-based playing style, and he could also pursue a goalkeeper more comfortable than Joe Hart with the ball at his feet. With Wilfried Bony struggling to live up to expectations up front, a new striker might help lighten the load on Sergio Aguero.

Who are the targets?

According to Sky sources, City are willing to pay as much as £43m for Juventus centre-back Leonardo Bonucci. The 29-year-old impressed for Italy at Euro 2016, but City could face competition for his signature from Antonio Conte's Chelsea. Guardiola is also thought to be an admirer of Everton's John Stones, and reports in Spain suggest he could target Barcelona goalkeeper Claudio Bravo.

What the manager has said

Guardiola has been tight-lipped on Manchester City's transfer business, preferring to talk up his plans to promote youth, but he did jokingly responded to fans' questioning about Lionel Messi. "He's not a bad player, this guy," he said. "But I'm sorry, Messi has to stay in Barcelona for the rest of his career."

Phil Thompson's view

"They need centre-backs and I mean more than one. Demichelis has gone after really struggling while Mangala and Otamendi have never really delivered. Kompany had injury after injury last season and you wonder how long her can stay fit for so I think they need two top quality central defenders.

"I also still think they need another experienced striker with Aguero's injury problems and Bony hasn't proved to be up to the job while Kelechi Iheanacho is still very raw."
