Manchester City are prepared to pay £43m for Leonardo Bonucci and plan talks with his agent, according to Sky sources.
City are understood to have failed with a £38m offer for the Juventus centre-back, who was part of an Italy defence that shut out Belgium and Spain at Euro 2016.
But sources at Sky in Italy say Pep Guardiola will meet with Bonucci's representative Alessandro Lucci in the next few days in an attempt to get the deal done.
Guardiola will hold his first press conference as City boss today and you can follow it all on skysports.com via our live blog from 11.30am.
City have spent more than £60m on centre-backs in the past two years, but neither Nicolas Otamendi nor Eliaquim Mangala established himself as an outright first-choice under Manuel Pellegrini.
Injuries restricted captain Vincent Kompany to just 13 Premier League starts last season, while Martin Demichelis left the club when his contract expired last month.
Bonucci, 29, has helped Juve win five straight Italian titles since joining from Bari in 2010 and has 62 caps for his country.
