Emmanuel Adebayor wanted to join West Ham on transfer deadline day but was unable to agree on terms with Tottenham to buy out the final year of his contract, according to Sky sources.

The 31-year-old striker, who was close to a move to Aston Villa earlier in the window, met with Hammers manager Slaven Bilic at Upton Park on Monday to discuss joining the club.

It is understood Tottenham were happy for the forward to leave and offered to pay off a portion of the final year of his contract - which is worth £5m - but Adebayor rejected their proposal.

Adebayor's failure to reach an agreement with Spurs scuppered any potential move to West Ham, who did manage to bolster their striking options by landing Nikica Jelavic from Hull City on transfer deadline day.

The Togo international has not been issued with a first-team squad number by Mauricio Pochettino as of yet this season but Spurs' failure to bring in another striker may necessitate bringing Adebayor back into the fold.
