Antonio Valencia is expected to leave Manchester United in the summer after the club opted not to trigger a contract extension.
United had until 5pm on Friday to activate the clause but caretaker-manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer hinted at his news conference ahead of Saturday's home game with Southampton that they would not be doing so.
"At the moment I'm not sure if Man United and Antonio will agree on [a deal for] the next year," Solskjaer said on Friday morning.
"He's not 100-per-cent fit. He's had a fantastic career here at Manchester United and in England. He's one of the only Premier League winners left in the dressing room.
"It depends on if he gets on the pitch in the next few months. He's the captain and a great servant to the club so hopefully I can get him on the pitch to show what he can do."
Valencia has made 338 appearances for United since joining from Wigan in June 2009 and was made club captain by former manager Jose Mourinho.
But the 33-year-old has made just one appearance under Solskjaer and is currently recovering from a calf injury in his native Ecuador.
