Louis van Gaal has checked into Manchester United's team hotel as normal ahead of their Premier League clash with Chelsea on Monday.

The under-pressure United manager, who admitted he was uncertain about his future and could quit the job on Boxing Day, will spend the night at the Lowry Hotel with his players and staff ahead of the fixture at Old Trafford.

It is understood Van Gaal took a recovery session of his players at the club's training ground in Carrington on Sunday following Saturday's 2-0 defeat at Stoke - a fourth successive loss that equalled United's worst run of form since 1964.

Van Gaal last week reacted angrily to newspaper speculation that he is imminently facing the sack, but after the defeat at the Britannia on Saturday he said: "I can also quit by myself.

"It is not always that the club has to fire or sack me. Sometimes I do it by myself. But that is something I speak to executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward about by himself - not with you.

United boss issues rallying cry ahead of Monday's clash with Chelsea

"I was not hurt [by the reports]. You don't understand my message. My message is that the media are saying and writing things that does not confirm what is happening in Manchester United.

"The decision on my future is another situation, we have lost the fourth game so you have to wait and see."

Van Gaal, whose side have dropped out of the top-four and down to sixth over the Christmas period, also gave a spiky interview to Sky Sports at full-time on Saturday.

Asked if he was still the man for the job, Van Gaal added: "It's more difficult because I am also part of the four matches we have lost, so people are looking at me, and I have to deal with that.

"But much more important is that the players have to deal with that because they have to perform. Pressure is now the big issue. I try to do everything but the pressure shall be higher and higher every match, and we have to solve that problem."
