Tottenham manager Mauricio Pochettino admitted he was relieved to see his side return to winning ways in the 2-1 victory over Aston Villa.

Spurs substitute Harry Kane's fired a last-minute winner following Nacer Chadli's equaliser with just six minutes left for the visitors.

The home side had been leading by Andreas Weimann's early strike - Villa's first goal in 547 minutes - when they were reduced to 10 men in the second half following Christian Benteke's dismissal following a clash with Ryan Mason.

The Belgium international was sent off after he pushed Mason in the face following the midfielder's second-half challenge.

The Argentine told Sky Sports 1: "It's a good victory. I am happy for the players and happy for our fans today they were great. It was great for all. It's a good three points in a difficult stadium.

"We started well, Aston Villa only had one shot on target, we shot a lot. At the moment you need to be strong.

"After the game against Newcastle I said we needed more and today's performance reflects that."

Pochettino was uncommital on the rights or wrongs on Benteke's sending-off though and added: "I didn't see the action, maybe after I analyse it (but) this is football and in football sometimes it happens.

"In football sometimes this happens, 11 v 11 or 10 v eleven, we always were better than Aston Villa.

"I understand in his position, I understand. This is football, sometime you're lucky, sometime the opposition is lucky. For us it it is important this three points."

Pochettino revealed he resisted calls to start Kane after his seven goals in cup competitions but was pleased with his match-winner.

He said: "We are really happy with him because in every competition he has scored, his display was good and the three points are very important for us.

"In football it's about emotional state and Harry had confidence and took the ball (for the free-kick) and scored.

"It was a good result because we won three points. I am happy and the team showed their character.

"Our position in the table was not good. Now we are three points off the places for the Champions League.

"In football it can change a lot. We know the situation, we need to build something special and in that process you need time and to be strong."
