Sky Bet EFL essential stats: Sunderland's unwanted record

Sunderland's John O'Shea applauds fans after the match

Each week, we will be taking a look back at some essential stats from the EFL. With League One and Two teams on FA Cup duty over the weekend, here are stats and facts from the Sky Bet Championship...

Sunderland's unwanted record

Sunderland's 1-0 defeat to Middlesbrough on Sunday has left them with just 10 points from their opening 16 Championship games - the lowest-ever points tally by a team relegated from the Premier League at this stage of the season.

Highlights from the Sky Bet Championship as Middlesbrough welcome rivals Sunderland.

Caretakers Billy McKinlay and Robbie Stockdale were in charge following Simon Grayson's sacking last Tuesday, but couldn't prevent Sunderland going 14 games without a win the Championship. During the run - which stretches back to a defeat of Bristol City - Sunderland have picked up only six points from a possible 42.

This is the first time Sunderland have ever gone 14 successive leagues games without a win in the second tier and they are the only side in the EFL without a clean sheet this season.

The Black Cats lie at the foot of the Championship and are currently in their lowest league position since August 2006. Swindon and Wolves are the only two sides to have suffered successive relegations from the Premier League - Sunderland fans will be hoping they don't join them on that list.
