SFA chief executive Stewart Regan insists Scotland will display poppies in their World Cup qualifier against England next week

Stewart Regan says Scotland will stand firm and defy FIFA by letting their players display poppies when they face England at Wembley.

Football's global governing body has banned both nations from displaying them and said sanctions could follow if players do show the poppy during their World Cup qualifying tie, which falls on November 11.

Regan, the Scottish Football Association chief executive, says the SFA still plan to mark Armistice Day alongside their colleagues from the Football Association in England by wearing black armbands with the poppy.

"It's about doing what's right and in reality we are not doing anything differently to what we did back in 2011," Regan told Sky Sports News HQ at the opening of Scotland's Sport Performance Centre at Heriot Watt University in Edinburgh.

"Scotland players wore an armband with a poppy on them when we played Cyprus in Larnaca in 2011. England players wore armbands with a poppy on them when they played Spain and, on that basis, we are struggling to understand what has changed.

"All FIFA have done is draw our attention to the laws of the game. Law four says that you shouldn't have any political statements or religious emblems on your shirt. We don't believe that the poppy represents either of those.

"If law four was ever going to catch anything, it wasn't going to catch a poppy being worn on an armband. For us, this is about respect and it is about remembrance and we want to do what is right on Armistice Day."
