Hornets boss hoping Ecuadorian will sign

Watford boss Adrian Boothroyd is hopeful of signing Ulises De la Cruz, although he doubts whether Nolberto Solano will join. The pair have been training with The Hornets this summer following their departures from Reading and West Ham respectively. While Boothroyd is hopeful of agreeing a deal with De la Cruz, he believes Solano is likely to join another club.

Do a deal

"Ulises has been with us for a couple of weeks. All being well perhaps we can do something with him," he told Sky Sports News. "Nobby's here just to train. We're happy to have him because he's a terrific guy. "You never say never, but I think that Nobby's probably got other things on his agenda right now." Meanwhile, Boothroyd has defended the club's transfer policy after they sold star defender Danny Shittu to Bolton for an undisclosed fee.
Balancing the books
Shittu has joined the likes of Darius Henderson and Nathan Ellington out of the exit door, but Boothroyd insists balancing the books is the club's highest priority. "We have to sell players because we have to keep the bank happy," he continued. "As a manager you get to a situation where you know players have to be sold and you hope that you can use that money to bring others in. "In this situation the bank's got to be kept happy first and we'll look after whatever arrives after that." Meanwhile, veteran defender Matt Jackson has announced his retirement from the game. The 36-year-old former Everton stopper joined The Hornets on a free transfer in May 2007 but made just eight starts last season.
